The most significant and immediate potential comes from our stent graft technology for the repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms, a market currently valued at over $400 million worldwide. This is expected to rise to $1 billion by 2010.
Over recent years, the use of stent grafts has provided a much less aggressive alternative to open surgery repair, resulting in shorter stays in hospital and better clinical outcomes.
LMT has developed a stent graft that is fixed securely to the aorta, preventing migration, and is flexible enough to bend without kinking in severely angulated aortas. This allows physicians to provide treatment to a group of otherwise untreatable patients. This, combined with clinical outcomes that are equivalent or better in easier-to-treat cases, should enable LMT to achieve a significant share of this growing market.
Lombard Medical has sold the goodwill, contractual rights and intellectual property of its polymer coatings business to Bayer MaterialScience AG (“BMS”) with the remaining assets to be sold to Bayer Plc”.
This divestment is part of Lombard Medical’s strategy to focus its resources on Aorfix™, its unique endovascular stent graft for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
